CZV courses: renew your certificate of competence

Five further training days in five years, and you renew your certificate of competence: the four further training centres of the EUROBUS Group regularly run CZV (Swiss driver qualification ordinance) courses for professional drivers of categories C, C1, D and D1, as single-day courses, at weekends or in a single week. The courses are checked and recognised by the asa (Association of Swiss Road Traffic Offices).

CZV stands for Chauffeurzulassungsverordnung, the Swiss driver qualification ordinance. Anyone who carries passengers or goods for a living needs a certificate of competence. It is issued for a limited period and expires after five years. To renew it, you must show five further training days within that time. The EUROBUS Training and Further Education Centre offers these further training days in Arbon, Bassersdorf, Biel/Bienne and Ruswil, for EUROBUS employees as well as for other companies and private individuals.

Who needs a CZV exam?

Anyone who acquired category C/C1 or D/D1 only after 1 September 2009 and wants to work as a driver must, under the Chauffeurzulassungsverordnung, take an exam. If you already hold the certificate of competence for goods transport, you take a partial exam for passenger transport. The procedure is described in the leaflet Information on the CZV exam (PDF, in German).

Not sure whether you need an exam? Send a scan of both sides of your driving licence to weiterbildung@eurobus.ch; the Training and Further Education Centre will tell you what to do next.

Course topics

The course titles are those of the booking calendar; the German title is given in brackets.

  • ARV1 Compact (ARV1 Kompakt)

ARV stands for Arbeits- und Ruhezeitverordnung, the working and rest time ordinance. In one day, participants learn about and explain the rules on driving, working and rest times. They describe how the tachograph (analogue and digital) works and is operated, and how the chart and the driver card are used. They know where to find information in the event of a vehicle fault and can use the operating instructions to identify possible sources of error.

  • Goods and passenger transport in focus (Güter- und Personentransport im Blick)

The basics for goods and passenger transport, from regulations to safety awareness: drivers place their activities in the context of goods and passenger transport, keep themselves informed about new or amended regulations and recognise the risks of overloading.

  • Acting safely in the event of damage (Sicher handeln im Schadenfall)

Practice meets theory: reacting correctly at the scene of an accident, accident reports and giving an oral account of the incident, communication and simple conflict resolution techniques, risks in the workplace, preventive measures and personal protective equipment.

  • Engine knowledge meets traffic rules (Motorwissen trifft Verkehrsregeln)

Right-of-way rules when turning, at junctions and when passing, rules for motorways, expressways and level crossings, and torque and power curves: how torque, engine speed and fuel consumption are related, and what the consequences of operating the engine and gearbox incorrectly are for safety.

  • Brake safely – drive safely (Sicher Bremsen – Sicher Fahren)

Driving style and external conditions in harmony: adapting driving behaviour to the conditions, driving defensively, using the braking systems according to road conditions. Also the most important principles of nutrition and the importance of a fully working electrical system in the vehicle.

  • My insurance – my pension provision (Meine Versicherung – Meine Vorsorge)

The morning is about retirement provision: how much money is needed in old age, what the pension reform means, how your pension can be improved, what the figures on the BVG occupational pension statement mean and what options there are for tax optimisation. In the afternoon, the topics are the employment contract, the Working Hours Act, overtime, rights and duties, and insurance.

  • Courses in French in Biel/Bienne

In Biel/Bienne, the CZV courses take place in German and French, including ‘OTR 1 Compact’, ‘Le transport de fret & de passagers’, ‘Agir toujours en toute sécurité’, ‘Moteur et Code de la Route’, ‘Freinage sûr – conduite sûre’, ‘Cours de 5 jours’ and ‘Cours de 5 jours – simulation d’examen’.
