Advent magic in front of the Renaissance town hall

On the Rathausplatz and in the surrounding lanes, the stalls of one of Germany’s most beautiful Christmas markets – the Augsburg Christkindlesmarkt – line up side by side. Let yourself be enchanted by the Angel Play, which turns the Augsburg town hall into a giant Advent calendar. The Fugger city looks back on a rich history. Famous is the ‘Fuggerei’, the world’s first social housing estate, founded in the 16th century.

Day 1: Switzerland - Augsburg

Travel past Bregenz and Ulm to Augsburg. Arrival at approx. 14:30. You have the rest of the day at leisure. The Renaissance architecture of the Town Hall and the Perlach Tower has formed a unique backdrop for the Christmas market for 500 years. The market can be traced back to 1498. At that time it was still called 'Lebkuchenmarkt' (Gingerbread Market) and served as a selling place for 'Lebzelter' (gingerbread bakers), who offered their wares here. 150 stalls tempt visitors with handicrafts, heavenly treats and hot mulled wine across the festively decorated market. From the breathtaking 'Golden Hall' of the Town Hall or the Perlach Tower, you can enjoy views over the glowing Christmas city. The traditional 'Engelesspiel' is well known: every Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 18:00, the imposing Town Hall transforms into a giant Advent calendar. Then 24 musical Christmas angels appear in the windows of the Renaissance building.
