A visit to the Christkindl
Wels, the charming town in the heart of Upper Austria, lives up to its location on the Romantikstrasse. The Stadtplatz, with its magnificent burghers' houses and arcaded courtyards, is one of the most beautiful in the country. The picturesque town of Steyr, together with its suburb Christkindl, is the ideal destination for a Christmas trip.
Day 1: Switzerland - Wels
Journey to Wels. Check-in at the family-run 4* Hotel Ploberger.
Day 2: Christmas Eve in Christkindl
Drive to Steyr. In the suburb of Christkindl, a visit to the unique nativity scenes is on the programme. You then visit the famous Christkindl post office. Anyone with Christmas post still to send can get the coveted postmark here. Next, a guided tour introduces you to the old iron city of Steyr. The festive Christmas Eve dinner at the hotel begins around 5.30 pm; you will enjoy the festive buffet and a Christmas programme with a little music. At 10.00 pm you can attend midnight mass at the Stadtpfarrkirche town parish church (about a 10-minute walk).
Day 3: Styria
Scenic tour of the Salzkammergut. Via Liezen you reach the well-known winter sports resort of Bad Mitterndorf. After a horse-drawn sleigh ride, you have time for lunch at the Eselalm. Back in Wels, the rest of the afternoon is yours to spend as you wish.
Day 4: Danube City
(Optional) Drive to Linz. The Pöstlingberg railway, one of the steepest adhesion railways in the world, takes you up the Pöstlingberg to the pilgrimage basilica “Seven Sorrows of Mary”, the city’s landmark. From there you enjoy a wonderful view of Linz and the Danube. The coach brings you back into the city, where a guided tour awaits. Highlights include the Hauptplatz with its baroque Trinity Column and the Old and New Cathedral. Early in the afternoon you travel to Kremsmünster, where you visit the Benedictine abbey. With its 1,200-year tradition and magnificent baroque buildings, the monastery is one of the largest and most important in Austria.
Day 5: Wels - Switzerland
Return journey to Switzerland.
The family-run 4* Hotel Ploberger is centrally yet quietly located in the old town of Wels, only a few minutes’ walk from the pedestrian zone and sights. The modern rooms have a bath or shower/WC, hairdryer, TV, WiFi, safe and tea/coffee station. The hotel also offers a cosy lounge & bar, a fitness and sauna area, and a generous breakfast buffet. Equivalent hotel if unavailable.
