Advent and shopping with Rhineland charm
Entertainment is taken very seriously in Cologne and Düsseldorf, and not just during the carnival season. No fewer than four large Christmas markets welcome visitors to the heart of Cologne during Advent. Düsseldorf more than holds its own against its long-standing rival: its lovingly decorated festive huts transform the city centre into a fantastic winter fairytale every year.
Day 1: Switzerland - Cologne
Journey to the cathedral city of Cologne, arriving at approx. 16:00. Free time. Stroll directly to the Christmas market in front of the impressive backdrop of Cologne Cathedral. It stands out above all for its magical location right in front of the city's landmark – the cathedral. For a somewhat different market experience, wander over to the harbour Christmas market right next to the Chocolate-
Museum in Rheinauhafen.
Day 2: Düsseldorf Christmas market
(Optional excursion) Visit the festively decorated state capital of North Rhine-Westphalia. The Düsseldorf Town Hall forms an enchanting backdrop for the Christmas market on the market square. Romantics are drawn to the Sternchenmarkt at Stadtbrückchen. If you have had enough of the pre-Christmas bustle and would rather go shopping, Düsseldorf is also just right for you. The heart of the city is the shopping boulevard "Kö" – Königsallee, with numerous luxury shops and galleries. Schadowstrasse, Germany's busiest shopping street, and the old town with its cult boutiques leave no shopping wish unfulfilled. In the afternoon, return to Cologne.
Day 3: Cologne - Switzerland
After breakfast, return journey to Switzerland.
The Christmas markets in Cologne
The most beautiful and best-known Christmas market in Cologne takes place in front of Cologne Cathedral. From Alter Markt to Heumarkt you will find cosy wooden stalls and an ice rink. The maritime Christmas market at the harbour, with its decorated pagoda tents reminiscent of ship sails, is also well worth a visit.
