Shopping paradise and cosmopolitan city
Frankfurt offers you an exciting mix of old and new, of tradition and modernity. This applies just as much to the city's architecture as it does to its atmosphere. High-rise skyline and half-timbered charm lie right next to each other. The Christmas market in the Old Town by the Römer is one of the largest in the country. Alongside classic Frankfurt Christmas specialities such as Quetschemännsche, Frankfurter Brenten and Bethmännchen, you will also find Christmas tree decorations and arts and crafts.
Journey to Frankfurt am Main. Arrival at around 14:00 Uhr. Enjoy a stroll through the city's shopping streets and department stores. As darkness falls, festive spirit fills the Christmas market. The more than 200 elaborately decorated stalls glow in friendly rivalry and give the picturesque Römerberg a fairytale look. A Christmas market in Frankfurt was first documented in 1393. In the Middle Ages, Christmas did not yet have the folkloric significance it has today. Back then it gave citizens the chance to stock up on essentials before the harshest part of winter began. Today the Frankfurt Christmas market stretches from the Zeil across the Liebfrauenberg, Neue Kräme, Paulsplatz, Römerberg and Fahrtor to the Mainkai.
Use the morning for a stroll around town and sightseeing. The return journey departs at 13:30 Uhr via Karlsruhe back to Switzerland.
Frankfurt lives up to its reputation as a world city when it comes to shopping too. Galleries, large department stores, trendy shops and exclusive boutiques vie for the attention of shoppers. Here you will find luxury goods, international top fashion and well-known labels. The Ladengalerie Zeil is particularly popular. Numerous smaller, lovingly run shops complement the offer.
Opening hours:
Mon - Sat: 10:00 - 20:00 Uhr
The Christmas market
Frankfurt's Christmas market is located in the heart of the city centre and stretches across several central squares, all of which are easily reached on foot. The centrepiece is the Römerberg with its large Christmas tree and its especially atmospheric historic setting. Directly adjoining is the Paulsplatz, which has a more open layout and is often used for events or stage programmes. Along the Mainkai, a quieter part of the market runs along the riverbank, offering a special atmosphere, particularly in the evening thanks to the lighting. The market also extends as far as the Hauptwache and along the Zeil, where the Christmas offer blends with the city centre's shopping. Overall, all areas are only a few minutes' walk apart, so you can easily explore the entire Christmas market on foot.
Opening hours:
