Portofino, Pesto & the Pearls of the Riviera di Levante
Pastel-coloured villages, the murmur of the sea and the scent of fresh basil: the Riviera di Levante combines Mediterranean joie de vivre with Ligurian cuisine. From Rapallo, you will discover Cinque Terre, Portofino and the secret of authentic pesto.
Day 1: Switzerland - Rapallo
Journey through Ticino to the Riviera di Levante. In Rapallo you check into your hotel directly on the promenade. With a welcome drink, you get into the mood for the days of culinary delights ahead.
Day 2: Cinque Terre
From Levanto the train takes you to Manarola and Riomaggiore, whose colourful houses nestle against steep cliffs and vineyard terraces. By ferry you sail along the rugged coastline to Monterosso with its old town and the Torre Aurora watchtower. In the evening you dine at a local trattoria and enjoy Ligurian specialities.
Day 3: Camogli - Portofino
By train you reach the fishing village of Camogli with its tall, brightly coloured house fronts. For lunch you enjoy a picnic with various Ligurian focaccia specialities, including the famous focaccia col formaggio from nearby Recco. By ferry you reach the secluded bay of San Fruttuoso with its Benedictine abbey, and continue on to the glamorous Portofino. On the return journey to Rapallo, enjoy the view from the water of the green cliffs of Monte di Portofino and the elegant villas along the shore.
Day 4: Sestri Levante - Lavagna
Sestri Levante enchants with the quiet Baia del Silenzio. In a pesto cooking course you pound basil, pine nuts and Ligurian olive oil into authentic pesto alla genovese, and then of course enjoy the homemade pasta straight away. To finish, you visit the impressive Basilica dei Fieschi in Lavagna.
Day 5: Genoa - Switzerland
In Genoa you discover the winding old town, the magnificent Palazzi dei Rolli and the lively harbour. In the afternoon you begin your journey home.
You stay at the 4* Hotel Europa in Rapallo, directly on the promenade and just a few minutes' walk from the railway station and the beach. The rooms are equipped with air conditioning, satellite TV, Wi-Fi, minibar and safe. A restaurant, bar and wellness area complete the offering. Equivalent hotel if the original is unavailable.
