Feel the sense of well-being known as "hygge" in the little kingdom
The Danes like to say that Denmark is a small country. Yet with its 500 islands and 7,500 km of coastline, it is not quite so small after all. It is also very much "hygge" - the Danish word for cosy. There are ancient Viking fortresses and magnificent Renaissance castles, impressive bridges, and many windmills turning energetically - and the charming city of Copenhagen. Discover and experience, accompanied by an expert and lover of the country, and at the best time of year, not only the famous sights but also the picturesque, homely and hidden corners.
Journey via Frankfurt to Hanover.
Passing Hamburg, the route continues through Schleswig-Holstein to the Danish North Sea coast. In the vast Wadden Sea National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a short walk along the marsh path with a local guide reveals breathtaking nature, wetlands and a unique bird paradise. With a bit of luck you may spot white-tailed eagles and seals as well.
Stroll through Ribe, once a wealthy and important royal city and Denmark's largest port. It is Denmark's oldest and coziest small town, in the deepest province. The cobblestones buckle more than anywhere else, and the 100 protected half-timbered houses have beams that are more crooked than usual. The journey continues via Blåvand to the Lynvig Fyr lighthouse, with magnificent views over the wide coastline and the wild North Sea. Scenic drive through the splendid dune landscape to Hvide Sande, and on to Vemb.
Journey to Thyborøn to see "Sneglehuset" - the Snail House - a unique building decorated inside and out with millions of shells and snails. Ferry crossing to Agger, followed by a drive and walks in Thy National Park, which stretches along the coast with its endlessly long, beautiful beaches. With a local guide you will observe flocks of breeding waders, admire the wild wave-riding of surfers in Klitmøller, a former fishing village, and enjoy a typical smørrebrød. Onward to the bustling city of Aalborg, a "Paris of the North". Denmark's third-largest city has in recent years undergone an impressive transformation from an industrial town into a cultural hub.
(Optional) Excursion to the northernmost tip of Jutland and to Skagen with its characteristic yellow houses. Here the two seas, the Skagerrak and the Kattegat, meet and merge into one another in waves - a unique natural spectacle, which you explore on a tractor ride. South of Skagen you come across the "Tilsandede Kirke", the buried church, and stroll to Råbjerg Mile, the second-largest migrating dune in Europe - definitely a highlight of your journey - 40 m high sand masses covering an area of 120 ha.
Journey to the cultural capital Aarhus, Denmark's second-largest city, and a stroll back in time at the open-air museum "Den Gamle By", built in the form of a medieval town. Lunch stop in the city centre, with its picturesque lanes across several small districts, inviting a midday break on Åboulevarden along the idyllic little river. In the former harbour, the brand-new, ultra-modern district Aarhus Ø is taking shape and has already become a local hotspot. The iceberg-shaped buildings already completed are an architectural masterpiece. Onward to Odense.
(Optional excursion) Funen is Denmark's "Garden Island". You visit the unique Renaissance Egeskov Castle with its magnificent, vast garden grounds. In the afternoon, a relaxing boat trip from Svendborg through the "Danish South Sea" to Tåsinge.
Odense is the home of the world-famous fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen. Walking tour of the restored old town. By coach you cross the Great Belt Bridge to reach the next island - Zealand - and arrive in Copenhagen. It is cosmopolitan, friendly and lively without being hectic - Denmark's wonderful capital Copenhagen, which ranks among the most beautiful metropolises in the world. In the afternoon, a guided city tour of this bustling, vibrant metropolis takes in the Little Mermaid, Strøget, Amalienborg Palace, where the Queen resides, the old harbour and the new Opera House. Quite innocently, the Little Mermaid sits on a rock at the end of the harbour promenade. You stay in the heart of Copenhagen, just a few steps from Tivoli and the pedestrian zone.
A full day at leisure in Copenhagen. How about a stroll along Europe's oldest and longest pedestrian street, Strøget, which winds for just over 2 km from Rådhuspladsen to Kongens Nytorv? With every metre towards Nytorv, Strøget becomes more elegant and the shop window displays more exclusive. The once-sinful mile by the harbour, "Nyhavn", today invites you to rest in its many restaurants, bars and street cafés with their colourful, old façades. (Optional) If you feel like it, join the morning excursion to North Zealand, where in the small town of Hillerød you can walk in the footsteps of the Danish kings. The vast Frederiksborg Castle sits like an enchanted fairy-tale fortress on three islands in a lake. It is worth strolling through the beautiful Baroque park with its many avenues. Do not miss an evening visit to the most famous amusement park in the world. Alongside numerous attractions, Tivoli also offers water features, a lake and several restaurants.
Detour to Møns Klint. They have been sung about and painted: the white cliffs rise up to 120 m - an exciting piece of nature and a magnificent view. Coach journey to Rødby, ferry crossing to Puttgarden and onward by coach to Hanover.
Return journey via Frankfurt to Switzerland.
