Finnish Lapland and the Northern Lights

Trip highlights:

  • February - a good time for the northern lights
  • Santa Claus Express - night train
  • Deep snow-covered Lapland

Winter adventure in the land of reindeer

For centuries, the Aurora Borealis, the Northern Lights, have captivated people. Its magical display in particular brightens the long, dark season of the high latitudes. Northern Finland lies perfectly within this auroral zone. February is an ideal time to witness this natural spectacle.

Day 1: Switzerland - Hildesheim

Journey via Basel, Frankfurt and Göttingen to Hildesheim.

Day 2: Hamburg - Lübeck - Travemünde

Drive to the port city of Hamburg. A city tour led by a local guide will help you get to know the city better. Continue to Lübeck for a walking tour of the old town. Then on to Travemünde for embarkation.

Day 3: At sea

Enjoy the amenities of the ship, let the sea breeze blow around your nose or visit the authentic Finnish sauna.

Day 4: Helsinki - Oulu

In the morning the ship arrives in Helsinki. Continue through seemingly endless forests and along frozen lakes of the uninhabited Finnish Lake District as far as the Gulf of Bothnia. Spectacular landscapes of snow and ice accompany you to Oulu, the "white city of the north" and the last stop before Lapland.

Day 5: Oulu - Levi/Sirkka

Following the coast, you reach Kemi, the town at the northern end of the Gulf of Bothnia. Not far away, near Tornio on the Torne River border, you cross the Swedish-Finnish border. You arrive at your destination in Finnish Lapland. Levi is one of the largest and most popular winter sports areas in Finland. In the evening, take a first stroll through Levi and, with a little luck, you may see the fascinating natural phenomenon of the northern lights.

Day 6: Reindeer farm

Today you visit a reindeer farm and enjoy a relaxed sleigh ride through the deep snow-covered winter landscape. Afterwards, enjoy a free afternoon in the magical winter scenery of the High North.

Day 7: Husky sleigh ride - reindeer dinner

(Optional) At a traditional husky farm in Sirkka, you get to know the friendly sled dogs and learn interesting facts about how they are kept. Then enjoy a sleigh ride through the quiet, snowy winter landscape, a special experience in the heart of Lapland's nature. In the evening you can enjoy a delicious, typically Lapland "reindeer feast" at the Restaurant Kammi (optional).

Day 8: Levi/Sirkka - Rovaniemi

Today you leave Levi/Sirkka and travel by coach to Rovaniemi, located directly on the Arctic Circle and the capital of Finnish Lapland. Lunch stop with a visit to the Arktikum in Rovaniemi. Continue to Santa Claus Village, where you pay a visit to Father Christmas in his village. There is not only souvenir shopping, but also a post office for Christmas mail. Dinner in town, then departure on the night train, the "Santa Claus Express", towards Helsinki (overnight in sleeper compartments).

Day 9: Helsinki - Embarkation

Through typically Finnish scenery with many forests and frozen lakes, your route takes you back to Helsinki, where our coach is already waiting for you. Breakfast in the restaurant. Places worth seeing include Senate Square, the Cathedral, the Orthodox Uspenski Cathedral with its gilded onion domes, and the Temppeliaukio Church, blasted out of a large rock and topped with a glass dome. Free time at your disposal. Crossing from Helsinki on a Finnlines ferry through the Baltic Sea, hopefully frozen over.

Day 10: At sea - Lübeck

Enjoy a rich breakfast buffet on board. You spend the day at sea, using the time to reflect on your experiences of the journey. Dinner on board. Arrival and disembarkation in Travemünde in the evening, then continue by coach to Lübeck.
