The World Championship of international trains takes place in the heart of the Ruhr region, on the stage of Bochum's large musical theatre. Starlight Express is a gripping, action-packed show and a wonderful love story for every taste and every age! Alongside the singing, the musical impresses with fast roller-skating and spectacular leaps. Experience the race of the trains and their carriages on a stage and roller-skating track that runs right through the audience.
Day 1: Switzerland - Bochum
Journey to the Ruhr. Arrival during the afternoon. You will be staying at the ACHAT Hotel Bochum Dortmund. For dinner, the numerous restaurants in the Ruhr Park, directly next to the hotel, are at your disposal
Day 2: Starlight Express
Today, enjoy your own independent exploration of the city or travel to Dortmund (optional). Dortmund is a lively city in the heart of the Ruhr, known for its rich industrial history, the successful football club Borussia Dortmund and first-class shopping. The city centre offers a mix of international brands, local shops and large department stores, with the Thier-Galerie and the popular Westenhellweg, which will set shopaholics' hearts racing.
And in the evening, the highlight: like no other musical, STARLIGHT EXPRESS stands for innovation and records. On 12 June 2025, the legendary musical celebrated its 36th birthday in Bochum. During this sensational record-breaking run, some 880 artists from 27 nations have performed more than 13,800 shows and covered many thousands of kilometres on their roller skates.
The secret of success of the roller-skating musical? A fascinating stage design, elaborate costumes, stirring music, spectacular technology and a story that delights young and old alike. The success of STARLIGHT EXPRESS is also the result of the openness of the creative team: over the years, STARLIGHT EXPRESS has been continually developed and so remains contemporary.
Day 3: Bochum - Switzerland
Return journey to Switzerland.
Musical Starlight Express
Starlight Express is an energetic spectacle that tells the story of a fictional train race, in which various trains compete for the world championship title. The plot unfolds in the imagination of a little boy whose toy trains come to life in his mind.
The main character is Rusty, a steam locomotive who is regarded as an outsider and must compete against modern trains such as the arrogantly fast diesel locomotive Greaseball and the ultra-modern electric locomotive Electra. Rusty is unsure whether he has any chance at all in the technologically advanced world. He is supported by Pearl, a first-class carriage who believes in him, and by the old and wise Papa.
You will stay for 2 nights at the 4* ACHAT Hotel Bochum (official national rating) in the east of Bochum, next to the MediTherme spa and a 10-minute walk from the Ruhr-Park shopping centre. The rooms have a bath or shower/WC, TV and Wi-Fi. An equivalent hotel if the above is unavailable.
