Day 1: Switzerland – Speyer – Mainz

Travel via Basel to Strasbourg and into the Palatinate. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe already declared: set off for Speyer. For 1000 years the city's landmark, the Imperial Cathedral, has risen tall and mighty. It is considered the largest surviving Romanesque church in Europe. Continue to Mainz.

Day 2: Mainz - New Year's Eve Gala

Today a guided city tour introduces you to Mainz. In the golden city on the Rhine, cultural monuments from 2000 years of urban history come to life. The cathedral, the Mainz Electoral Palace and the magnificent aristocratic palaces bear witness to the former power of the archbishops. Discover how Johannes Gutenberg revolutionised book printing 550 years ago. Mainz is also the state capital, the media hub of ZDF and a student city. In the evening, an elegant New Year's Eve gala awaits you in the hotel's ballroom, with a generous buffet, music and dancing. Celebrate the New Year in high spirits.

Day 3: Mainz

Plan your day in Mainz exactly as you wish. Be sure not to miss the grand carnival parade, which starts at 11.11 am. Around 2500 guards, Schwellköpp and flag bearers, as well as musicians, march through Mainz city centre on New Year's Day. Via Grosse Bleiche you reach Schillerplatz and then Domplatz. On Domplatz, the New Year's concert of the Mainz Guards takes place, organised by the Mainz Carnival Association and the city. (Optional) In the evening, from 6.00 to 8.00 pm, a musical highlight awaits you at the Rheingoldhalle Mainz: the festive New Year's concert under the motto “Dances and Ballets”. The renowned Deutsche Radio Philharmonie of SR/SWR, conducted by Josep Pons, presents a spirited programme full of rhythmic elegance and dance-like finesse. Look forward, among other works, to the Hungarian Dances Nos. 1 and 3 by Johannes Brahms, the Slavonic Dances Nos. 1 and 2 by Antonín Dvořák and the stirring dances from Galanta by Zoltán Kodály. Works by Pyotr Tchaikovsky (Waltz of the Flowers), Giuseppe Verdi (Dances from Macbeth, Act 3) and Manuel de Falla (La vida breve, Interlude and Dance) also take you on a musical journey around the world through a variety of dance styles and eras. A lively start to the New Year.

Day 4: Mainz – Heidelberg – Switzerland

After breakfast, travel to romantic Heidelberg, where a local guide will be waiting to lead you on a guided tour. The city of love enchants its visitors with narrow lanes and a picturesque old town. Above the River Neckar stands the commanding ruin of the castle, which was the glittering residence of the Electoral Palatinate for five centuries. Return to Switzerland to your drop-off point.

On the edge of Mainz's picturesque old town, you will stay at the 4* Hotel Hilton Mainz, a modern hotel offering the highest standards, with views over the Rhine. Enjoy local and international specialities in the Weinstube restaurant, which is also served on the beautiful summer terrace when the weather is fine. Thanks to its central location in the heart of the city, cultural sights, shops and offices are just a few steps away. The rooms are elegantly decorated and contemporarily furnished. An equivalent hotel will be provided if the original is unavailable.
