Indulgence and culture in a picturesque landscape
The historic and scenic highlights of Piedmont are every bit as impressive as its culinary ones: the charming hill country of the Langhe, towns such as Alba and Asti, and the imposing Alpine mountain scenery captivate with a truly unique backdrop. On this Deluxe coach tour, you stay in a stylish hotel, taste fine wines and enjoy regional delicacies.
Drive to Trino for the Principato di Lucedio rice estate, where you enjoy a fine lunch featuring risotto variations. Afterwards, guided tour of the rice estate: Cistercian monks from Burgundy founded a monastery here as early as the 12th century and began making the marshy plain usable. In the mid-15th century they then brought rice to Italy and turned the Po Valley into the centre of European rice cultivation. Onward journey to the Langhe to Cherasco and your hotel. Cherasco lies well sheltered on a high plateau. This pretty little town became the preferred summer retreat of the Piedmontese nobility during the Baroque period.
Today you enjoy a scenic drive through the hills of the Langhe. Take a stroll with your tour guide through Barolo and La Morra. In the afternoon, explore the small wine and truffle capital of Alba. The town is known not only for its white truffles; it is also where what is probably the world's best-known hazelnut spread was invented. Your guide will take you through the historic centre of the “City of 100 Towers”, as Alba is also called because of its medieval family towers. After the city tour, you have free time at your disposal. In the evening, a festive New Year's Eve dinner awaits you at the hotel.
Accompanied by a guide, you visit the medieval Grinzane Cavour Castle, set among the vineyards and hills of the Langhe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014. Once the home of Count Camillo Benso di Cavour, architect of Italian unification in the 19th century, it now houses the regional Enoteca and a small museum dedicated to the wine and rural culture of the region. Light lunch at the small, family-run Cantina Marsaglia. Over a rustic meal in the wine cellar, you can savour the fine wines and the delicious treats served to you. (Optional) At 5.00 pm you have the opportunity to attend the New Year's concert at the Church of San Domenico in Alba.
Drive to Como, where you have time to explore the town at your own pace. Return journey via the Gotthard into German-speaking Switzerland to your drop-off point.
The 4* Hotel I Somaschi (official national category) is housed in a carefully restored monastery dating from the
17th century in the historic centre of Cherasco. The former monastery com-
plex impresses with original frescoes, stucco ceilings and a spacious
inner courtyard with a well-kept garden and outdoor pool. The hotel's own restaurant
“Il Teatro” serves Piedmontese specialities, including dishes with truffles, in
a stylish setting. The 27 elegant rooms and suites are equipped with air conditioning, minibar, safe, desk, free Wi-Fi, TV and bathrooms with shower or bath, hairdryer and high-quality toiletries. Some rooms also offer views of the surrounding hills or the inner courtyard. Equivalent hotel if unavailable.
