NZZ Reader Trip: Parma - Verdi Festival

This trip takes you into the world of the great music dramatist Giuseppe Verdi. Visit his birthplace in Roncole, the Casa Barezzi and the Teatro Verdi in Busseto. In Parma, the impressive Teatro Farnese and the renowned Teatro Regio await you, where at the Verdi Festival you will experience 'Nabucodonosor' in a new production, a highlight for opera lovers. You will be accompanied by specialist Margitta Rosales, who completed her classical singing studies with distinction at the State Conservatoire in Sofia and will give you fascinating insights into Verdi's work. Enjoy also the culinary highlights of the region and the charming atmosphere of Parma.
Day 1: Switzerland – Parma
Travel via Milan to Parma. While you are on the way, your music tour guide will prepare you for the programme ahead. Lunch at a restaurant on Lake Lugano. Check-in and a delicious dinner at the elegant new Grand Hotel di Parma.
Day 2: Parma & Opera
In the morning, guided city walk through Parma. You will see, among other sights, the Baptistery, the cathedral and the unique Teatro Farnese, encircled by wooden galleries. Thanks to influential rulers, Parma has always been wealthy and could afford especially impressive architectural monuments. After an early dinner at the hotel, transfer to the Teatro Regio, where the opera performance awaits you.
Day 3: Excursion In Verdi’s Footsteps
Full-day guided tour of Verdi’s birthplace in Roncole, the Casa Barezzi, once the home of his patron and a treasure trove of historical memories, and the Verdi Theatre in Busseto. Lunch at a typical trattoria, the Vecchio Mulino in Roncole. Afterwards, return journey to Parma.
Day 4: Parma – Switzerland
A relaxed journey home with lovely memories of music, culture and cuisine. Lunch at a Ticinese grotto.
