Cliffs, gardens and palaces straight out of a Rosamunde Pilcher novel
These English landscapes could have stepped straight out of a picture book or the films based on Rosamunde Pilcher's celebrated novels. On this deluxe coach tour, enjoy the solitude of Dartmoor, gentle rolling hills, the crashing sea at Land's End and the most beautiful coastal scenery of southern England and Cornwall. You will marvel at the stone circle of Stonehenge, soak up the charm of historic cities such as Bath, and admire the proud Gothic cathedral in Exeter. Add to this magnificent stately homes such as Stourhead, picturesque villages such as Clovelly and enchanting landscape gardens such as Stourhead.
Travel via Basel to Reims, home to the magnificent Gothic cathedral. Continue to Arras, where you spend the night.
Travel to Calais and cross by ferry to Dover. The white chalk Cliffs of Dover greet you from afar. Follow the natural coastline to the idyllic town of Rye, with its ancient cobbled streets and crooked half-timbered houses. Via Lewes, continue towards Arundel, a small town known for Arundel Castle. Onward to the centre of Salisbury.
In Salisbury you visit the mighty cathedral, a masterpiece of English Gothic architecture. Breamore House is one of the country's most important Elizabethan manor houses. As a family home that is still lived in today, it offers a unique insight into the traditions and way of life of the English landed gentry. Continue to the mysterious 5,000-year-old stone circle of Stonehenge. Its basic layout consists of an outer ring and an inner horseshoe of sandstone blocks.
At Stourhead you stroll through the highlight of British garden design. In 1720, banker Henry Hoare had a lake landscape with classical-style temples and grottoes built around a pond beside his country house. Stourhead is considered the most famous example of ‘painted’ landscapes. Via Exeter, whose skyline is dominated by its magnificent cathedral, you reach the wild and romantic Dartmoor National Park. Overnight stay in St Austell, in the heart of Cornwall. Several scenes from the Pilcher films have already been filmed at The Cornwall Hotel.
(Optional excursion) With your tour guide, travel to England's most westerly point, Land's End. Cornwall is typified by romantic coastal towns, small farms, narrow lanes and white cottages, as well as moorland and hills. St Ives was once a sleepy fishing village with colourful houses, until painters and sculptors arrived attracted by its intense light. Rosamunde Pilcher spent her childhood here.
With your tour guide, you once again follow in the footsteps of Rosamunde Pilcher and visit Prideaux Place, a manor house that has been home to the Prideaux-Brune family for 400 years. It is a frequent film location and invites you to enjoy a traditional "cream tea" with scones and strawberry jam. In Clovelly, a former pirate haunt on the "Coast of Dreams", you walk down the 120 metres to the picturesque, car-free fishing village. You reach Bristol in the evening.
A short drive to Bath. In the morning, enjoy a walking tour and a sightseeing drive of Bath. This glorious city owes its beauty to the genius of two men, the elder and younger Wood. The two architects gave its squares and crescent-shaped streets their harmony. The hot springs of Bath were already being used by the Romans. Among the many sights not to be missed in Bath are Pulteney Bridge over the River Avon. A must-see is the Royal Crescent, the Circus, the Assembly Rooms, the Royal Theatre and much more. Continue to Dover and Lille.
Return journey from Lille across France, through Alsace to Basel.
