Deluxe Flight & Coach Tour to a Mystical Land
Scotland is renowned for its fine whisky, distinctive tartan patterns, the kilt, and the bagpipes. Discover the Scots on this flight & coach tour, a hospitable, humorous and tradition-minded people.
Flight from Zurich to Glasgow.
From the bustling economic metropolis into the quintessentially rugged landscape. Along Loch Lomond you first head into the impressive Glen Coe, the "Glen of Tears". Its breathtaking beauty is only clouded by its historical events. An entire clan was betrayed and massacred here - a dark chapter of Scottish history. Via the Skye Bridge you reach the Isle of Skye.
The Hebridean island of Skye has a landscape full of contrasts. Gentle hills and rugged cliffs alternate with green meadows and bare mountains. A popular photo subject is the basalt sea cliffs known as the "Kilt Rocks", which resemble a pleated Scottish kilt. At midday you cross by ferry from Uig to the Outer Hebrides.
On Lewis, the northernmost island of the Outer Hebrides, there is only one town, Stornoway. The Broch of Carloway, a defensive tower with 3 m thick walls, is worth seeing. Harris is the southern part of the island, with the main town of Tarbert. Harris is famous for the tweed that bears its name, which is still made exclusively from selected wool from Scottish sheep.
From Stornoway you cross by ferry to Ullapool. You skirt the southern tip of Loch Eriboll and enjoy a drive through the charming scenery to Tongue. Lake-dotted moorland and rugged coastlines accompany you along the entire route north into Scotland.
Ferry crossing to the Orkney Islands. With the local tour guide you discover the fascinating island world with its unspoilt nature, endless pastures and deserted beaches. You visit the Neolithic settlement of Skara Brae. In the capital, Kirkwall, you stroll through narrow lanes lined with houses that have a Norwegian feel. Things turn mystical at the Ring of Brodgar, a stone circle built around 2500 BC that is larger than Stonehenge.
Today you visit Dunrobin Castle. Its extensive grounds, with a magnificent view over the sea, were modelled on the gardens of Versailles. Along the coastal road to the Dornoch Firth, where up to 600 dolphins frolic in the open sea. Overnight in Inverness or Nairn.
You travel right through the magnificent Highlands and pay tribute to the Duke of Atholl; the snow-white Blair Castle has been the family seat for centuries and is surrounded by a wonderful garden. Near Pitlochry you visit a whisky distillery and are initiated into the secrets of the "water of life". (Optional) Today you can enjoy the spectacular Royal Military Tattoo (August travel dates only).
The city is the focal point of culture and history. The world-famous Royal Mile is best explored on foot. It links the proud Edinburgh Castle with the stately Holyrood Palace, today's seat of government. Free afternoon.
