Discoveries in the Maremma
Cypress-lined hills, medieval hill towns, wild coastal landscapes and aromatic wines: the Maremma, the unspoilt soul of Tuscany, has it all. Look forward to a journey full of colour, fragrance and history. Discover winding lanes, venerable castles, Mediterranean island idylls and culinary delights such as homemade Pecorino, olive oil and the fine Morellino di Scansano. Welcome to one of Italy's most authentic corners: warm, sunny and full of character.
Travel via Milan and La Spezia to the picturesque Castiglione della Pescaia.
Today you head into the heart of the Maremma, to Massa Marittima. The lovingly preserved old town is an architectural gem. On a guided walk we delve into its history. Afterwards we are invited to an estate for a wine tasting and a small snack of regional delicacies.
After a scenic drive along the coast, you reach Porto Santo Stefano on the Monte Argentario peninsula. From there you cross by ferry to the idyllic island of Giglio. Turquoise sea, winding bays and Mediterranean vegetation define the scene. By minibus you explore the island's villages of Giglio Porto and Giglio Castello, which sits on a hill.
If you wish, discover the impressive tufa landscape in eastern Tuscany today. You visit the historic towns of Pitigliano and Sovana. While Pitigliano offered refuge to Jewish families in the 15th and 16th centuries, Sovana was once an important ecclesiastical and political centre.
Today is entirely devoted to relaxation, swimming or "dolce far niente".
In the morning you stroll through the charming Capalbio, which is surrounded by medieval walls. After lunch a very special highlight awaits you: the "Giardino dei Tarocchi". The colourful, oversized sculptures by the French artist Niki de Saint Phalle create a fairytale atmosphere.
