Magical Wachau and Viennese Charm
When Johann Strauss composed the waltz "The Blue Danube" in autumn 1866, he let himself be enchanted by one of the most beautiful landscapes in Europe. You can do the same: you will stay in a wonderful hotel directly on the Danube, at the gateway to the gentle Wachau. Stift Melk awaits you, the largest and most magnificent Baroque monastery in Austria, a building that will take your breath away. Experience Vienna, the enchanting metropolis on the Danube, and enjoy Austrian cuisine and hospitality.
Travel past Munich to a lunch stop in a typical Bavarian beer garden. After a relaxed break, continue via Salzburg to the gateway to the charming Wachau, Ybbs an der Donau. Your hotel is located directly on the beautiful blue Danube.
The last boarding point in Switzerland is St. Gallen, Bahnhof Nord, at 10.35 am.
Over a wonderful breakfast, watch the cargo ships glide slowly past your hotel. Take your time to ease into the day. After a short coach journey you reach Melk, where you will be deeply impressed by the oldest and largest Baroque monastery building in Austria. Stift Melk towers high above the little town. Thanks to its palatial monumentality, the world-famous abbey is regarded throughout Europe as an icon of Baroque architecture. Since its founding in 1089 it has been inseparably linked with the development of Austria, and to this day it has been continuously inhabited by Benedictine monks. Created in its present form to plans by J. Prandtauer and J. Munggenast, it houses rooms of magnificent splendour and some of the greatest art treasures in Austria.
Vienna, the city of dreams, awaits you today in all its splendour. On the sightseeing tour, admire the grand buildings along the Ringstrasse, such as the State Opera, Burgtheater, Hofburg, Parliament, University, Schloss Belvedere and St. Stephen's Cathedral. Enjoy time for strolling and discover one of Europe's most enchanting metropolises, and of course the Viennese wit. You will have plenty of time to explore Vienna on your own and enjoy a day in the Austrian capital.
Today is devoted entirely to the Wachau, a cultural landscape that is among the most beautiful stretches of the Danube. From Krems to Spitz and onwards by coach to Dürnstein, the blue-and-white tower of the abbey church on the riverbank is visible from afar, rising above the picturesque lanes. The Wachau is a uniquely beautiful and romantic region that will enchant you. Also known for its vineyards, you will visit a winery where, of course, a tasting of the noble wine is a must.
You travel through Salzburgerland into the Tyrol, via Innsbruck and over the Arlberg Pass, back to Switzerland.
In Ybbs an der Donau you will stay at the
