IGA Ruhr 2027 Garden Show

Trip highlights:

  • Innovative themed worlds
  • Modern landscape architecture
  • Pioneering design of open spaces

Green, creative and forward-looking

From April to October 2027, the Ruhr region will become the stage for the International Garden Show IGA 2027. For the first time, the IGA is being held not in a single city but across an entire region, combining industrial heritage, modern garden and landscape architecture and pioneering concepts for sustainability and urban living in a unique way. Under the guiding theme "How do we want to live tomorrow?", IGA 2027 goes far beyond a traditional garden show. It is a platform for the questions of the future and a source of inspiration for innovative ideas in climate protection, mobility, urban greenery and quality of life.

Trip details

Day 1: Switzerland - Essen

Journey to Essen.

Day 2: Zukunftsgarten Dortmund

On around 7,000 m², the Zukunftsgarten Dortmund presents the full range of modern garden and plant culture. From classic seasonal bedding to innovative perennial plantings and practical garden designs, the exhibition combines colour, structure and creative themed worlds. The Hansa Coking Plant was once a symbol of industrial power. Today it is being carefully restored by the Industrial Heritage Foundation and made accessible in a new way. For IGA 2027, the site is gaining a new entrance area, which also serves as the gateway to the Zukunftsgarten. Those who arrive here step not only into a historic site, but into a place of change – visible, tangible and open to new perspectives.

Seen from there, behind the buildings, the Kokereipark is taking shape, a leisure and recreation area of around 14 hectares. Wide meadows, new paths and a variety of activities invite you to leave everyday life behind. At its heart is a spectacular highlight: the play and experience sculpture "Wolke" (Cloud). Seven interlocking steel rings, up to 28 metres in diameter, recall the steam clouds of past industrial times.

Day 3: Zukunftsgarten Gelsenkirchen

The theme of climate adaptation runs like a thread through the entire Zukunftsgarten in Gelsenkirchen. This is particularly evident in the Green-Blue Band: a new water landscape between the IGA entrance, the amphitheatre and the coal bunker. Another highlight is the former turning basin of the Nordstern colliery, which will open to the public for the first time and permanently for IGA 2027. Natural walkways, rest areas and viewing platforms invite you to linger. Floating flower islands and – during the IGA year – artistically staged water shows make the spot a special experience right by the canal. A functional industrial site is thus transformed into an extraordinary leisure and recreation area.

Day 4: Zukunftsgarten Duisburg

(Optional) The Zukunftsgarten Duisburg showcases horticultural diversity at a high professional level, combining classic design with forward-looking planting concepts. Across more than 11,000 square metres, seasonal bedding areas, perennial plantings, woody plant displays and floral arrangements keep the park vibrant throughout the entire IGA. A particular unique feature is the large-scale rose display. It reinterprets the guiding question of IGA 2027, "How do we want to live tomorrow?", in horticultural terms, using heat- and drought-tolerant rose varieties combined with perennials and grasses from Mediterranean vegetation zones – explicitly designed to be insect-friendly and ecological. Alternatively, you can spend the day as you wish in Essen.
