Magnificent landscapes - not just for eccentric kings
Mention the Loire and you may think fondly of magnificent Renaissance châteaux full of pomp and splendour, lavish feasts held by kings and their mistresses, and bloody intrigues and deadly feuds. The Deluxe coach tour to the "Garden of France" tempts with a picturesque river landscape, wonderful garden paradises, magnificent art treasures and charming little towns, but also with time and relaxed indulgence.
Journey through Burgundy to Blois, whose château was the seat of the French kings.
Excursion: (Opt.) Villandry owes its excellent reputation to its five unique gardens. Around the last Loire château built during the Renaissance, a enchanting park landscape unfolds: the ornamental kitchen garden, the flower garden, the water garden, the medicinal herb garden and the labyrinth. Detour to nearby Azay-le-Rideau. Balzac described the romantic water château, which reflects gracefully in the lake, as a "cut diamond".
Excursion: (Opt.) You visit the Château de Cheverny, famous for its pack of almost 100 hunting dogs, which the lord of the château still keeps today. Set in a vast park, the largest château on the Loire, Château Chambord, impresses simply through its dimensions: 282 chimneys, countless turrets and 426 rooms. It stands as a symbol of the immense wealth and power of the king. Afternoon at leisure in Blois. Perhaps you would like to visit the magnificent château with its bloody history or stroll through the old town.
Excursion: (Opt.) The highlight of every Loire journey is Chenonceau, which was built on five arches across the River Cher. For centuries, women held sway in the palace, whether queen, wife or mistress. Afterwards you visit the "tomato prince" de Broglie at the Château de la Bourdaisière and marvel at the colourful garden as much as at its 650 tomato varieties. You enjoy a light lunch with typical produce from the château garden. Afternoon stop in Amboise, whose château majestically overlooks the Loire. In this little town, the genius Leonardo da Vinci died around 500 years ago.
Return journey to Switzerland.
