Island worlds - right at the top of Germany
Discover the North Sea islands on this Deluxe coach tour: the glamorous island of Sylt and the tranquil Halligen. Explore the vast Wadden Sea with its ebb and flow, charming harbour towns and remote sandbanks where seals bask. The Hanseatic city of Hamburg provides the perfect contrast.
The journey heads north from Basel to Frankfurt. We continue to the university town of Göttingen, which still exudes a special atmosphere of medieval charm and Hanseatic wealth. Passing Hildesheim, you reach Hanover in the evening.
The last boarding point in Switzerland is Basel, SBB station.
Journey to Hamburg. On a guided city tour with a local guide, you discover the sights of this Hanseatic city. The jewel of the city centre is the basin of the Binnenalster, laid out in the 17th century, along whose south-western side runs Hamburg’s most popular promenade, the Jungfernstieg. St. Pauli, the epitome of the “sinful” entertainment district, owes its name of all things to the Apostle Paul, in whose honour a church was consecrated here in 1682. In the afternoon you may explore the harbour by boat (not included). In countless harbour basins you can breathe in the sea air and marvel at mighty ocean liners. Onward journey to the North Sea coast, to Husum.
By train across the famous Hindenburg Dam to the Queen of the Frisian Islands, Sylt, which has earned a reputation as a "jet-set" paradise. During the island tour you discover the many facets of Sylt: the busy, glamorous Westerland, the "Red Cliff" at Kampen, but also untouched dune landscapes and large bird sanctuaries. By ferry you reach the 129 km² island of Rømø, which has only 700 inhabitants and shines with endless sandy beaches. A causeway leads to the mainland and through the gently rolling Danish Jutland back to Husum.
(Optional excursion) Short coach ride to Schlüttsiel. The 10 Hallig islands are "islands" without dykes, which sink into the sea at high tide, with only their warfs (raised mounds with houses) rising above the water. Unprotected from the sea, they lie in the middle of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park. You travel by boat past the seal sandbanks, through the fascinating island world of the Wadden Sea, and land at the small island of Hallig Hooge. On a romantic horse-drawn carriage ride and a walk, you explore the island. The truly worthwhile church from the 17th century stands on the church warf. The magnificent landscape, the iodine-rich air, the fascinating interplay of the tides and the indescribable expanse of the sea: the Hooge excursion includes almost everything. During the afternoon, boat trip back to the mainland.
Excursion to the small town of Friedrichstadt. Duke Friedrich III founded the town in 1621 to establish a trading metropolis. The buildings of Dutch brick Renaissance style and the canals shape the image of this "City of Tolerance". On an (optional) canal cruise you hear all about this "Little Holland". Free afternoon in the charming town of Husum; perhaps you would like to take a longer walk along the North Sea coast.
You travel through Schleswig-Holstein as far as Glückstadt, where you cross the Elbe by ferry. You visit the small, pretty harbour town of Stade with its countless historic half-timbered houses. The Altes Land is the largest contiguous fruit-growing area in Northern Europe, with thousands of trees. Onward journey past Hildesheim and Göttingen to Hann. Münden.
Stroll through the centre of Hann. Münden with its 700 half-timbered houses. Return journey via Heidelberg and through Alsace back to Switzerland.
You stay for 4 nights at the selected 4* Hotel Theodor Storm (official national category), right in the charming old town of the harbour town of Husum. The comfortable rooms are romantic in the listed Art Nouveau main building or modern in the annexe, and are equipped with shower/WC, minibar, safe, WiFi and satellite TV.
