Lagoons, salt marshes and flamingos
Between the Rhône valley and the Mediterranean lies the fascinating Camargue in southern France. A vast landscape where horses and flamingos are as much a part of the scene as living traditions. Experience an unforgettable journey into one of the most impressive regions of southern France.
Boarding at one of the numerous pick-up points in German-speaking Switzerland or at Geneva Airport. The journey leads from the foothills of the Alps through the Rhône Valley into Provence and on past Arles to La Grande-Motte. Check-in at the 4* Hotel Novotel La Grande-Motte Golf, where you will spend 4 nights. Dinner at the hotel.
In the morning, you will explore with the local tour guide one of the most impressive natural paradises of the Camargue: the Parc Ornithologique de Pont de Gau. Along some 7 km of paths through lagoons, reed beds and marshland, you will have the opportunity to experience the unique wildlife of the region up close. Particularly impressive are the countless pink flamingos that make their home here all year round, along with many other rare bird species that live or rest in this protected area. Comfortable boardwalks, viewpoints and informative signs make the walk through the reserve an unforgettable nature experience, and it is perfect for beautiful photos.
In the afternoon, you visit Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, where, according to legend, the two sisters of the Virgin Mary, Mary Salome and Mary Jacobe, came ashore after fleeing the Holy Land. The town is home to the most important pilgrimage church in southern France, the Église des Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, a mighty Romanesque building with a fortress-like character. Enjoy your time in this lively coastal town, which has not only spiritual significance but also charming lanes, its proximity to the sea and the typical Camargue atmosphere. There is time for a stroll along the promenade, a glass of rosé or a browse through the boutiques selling regional crafts. Return to your hotel and individual dinner.
In the morning, you will visit the famous salt pans of Aigues-Mortes, where the precious «white gold» has been harvested for centuries. On a guided tour of the extensive site by the little land train, you will learn fascinating facts about traditional salt production. Depending on the season, the water shows fascinating shades of pink and red, caused by microorganisms and algae. In the afternoon, the impressive fortified town of Aigues-Mortes awaits you, a medieval gem set amid the salt marshes of the Camargue.
The imposing walled town was founded in the 13th century by King Louis IX as a departure point for the Crusades, and today it is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in France. On a walk through the historic old town, you will explore the impressive town walls with their numerous towers, including the mighty Tour de Constance, which once served as a watchtower and prison. From the walkways, you will enjoy wide views over the surrounding salt pans and the unique landscape of the Camargue. Return to your hotel and individual dinner.
Today you immerse yourself once more in the authentic world of the Camargue, a fascinating landscape of marshes, salt flats and wide pastures where black bulls graze and elegant white Camargue horses roam free. You will be warmly welcomed at a traditional manade by the gardians, the mounted herders of the Camargue.
On a covered wagon ride across the vast estate, you will experience the original nature and wildlife up close and learn a great deal about centuries-old traditions, from bull breeding to life in the rhythm of the region. Afterwards, you will refresh yourself in a rustic setting with a typical Camargue lunch, which naturally includes the regional speciality «Gardianne de Taureau», tender bull meat braised in red wine. It is served with Camargue rice, local side dishes and a glass of regional wine.
Enjoy the authentic atmosphere and the warm welcome from your hosts. In the afternoon, you continue to Arles, the «city of art and history». On a guided walk, you will discover the impressive traces of antiquity, including the well-preserved Roman amphitheatre, the ancient theatre and many other sights that tell of the rich past of this former Roman provincial capital. Afterwards, you have free time to explore the old town's lanes at your own pace, visit a café or follow in the footsteps of Van Gogh, who was also once captivated by Arles and the light of Provence. Return to your hotel with many impressions and atmospheric memories. Dinner at the hotel.
With many new impressions to take home, you begin your return journey to Switzerland.
You will stay for 4 nights at the modern 4* Hotel Novotel La Grande Motte Golf, right by the golf course and close to the beach as well as the pyramid-style architecture of the garden town. The hotel is eco-certified (Green Key label) and has a seasonal outdoor pool with sun terrace.
