Lagoons, salt pans and flamingos
Between the Rhône valley and the Mediterranean lies the fascinating Camargue in the south of France. A vast landscape where horses and flamingos are as much a part of the picture as living traditions. Enjoy an unforgettable journey to one of the most impressive regions of southern France.
Boarding at one of the numerous pick-up points in German-speaking Switzerland or at Geneva Airport. The journey leads from the Alpine foothills through the Rhône Valley into Provence and on past Arles to La Grande-Motte. Check-in at the 4* Hotel Novotel La Grande-Motte Golf****, where you will spend 4 nights. Dinner at the hotel.
In the morning, together with your local guide, you will discover one of the most impressive natural paradises of the Camargue – the Parc Ornithologique de Pont de Gau. On a network of paths of around 7 km through lagoons, reed beds and marshland, you have the opportunity to experience the unique wildlife of this region up close. Particularly impressive are the countless pink flamingos that live here all year round, as well as many other rare bird species that live or rest in this protected area. Comfortable walkways, viewpoints and informative boards make the walk through the reserve an unforgettable experience of nature – also perfect for beautiful photo opportunities.
In the afternoon you will visit Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, where according to legend the two sisters of the Mother of God – Mary Salome and Mary Jacobe – are said to have come ashore after fleeing the Holy Land. The town is therefore home to the most important pilgrimage church in southern France, the Église des Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, a mighty Romanesque building with a fortress-like character.
Enjoy your stay in this lively coastal town, which is appealing not only for its spiritual significance, but also for its charming lanes, its proximity to the sea and the typical Camargue atmosphere. Here you will have time for a stroll along the promenade, a glass of rosé or a leisurely browse through the boutiques selling regional crafts. Return to your hotel and dinner at leisure (not included).
In the morning you will discover the famous salt marshes of Aigues-Mortes, where the precious “white gold” has been harvested for centuries. On a guided tour by little train through the extensive site, you will learn fascinating details about traditional salt production. Depending on the season, the water appears in captivating shades of pink and red, caused by micro-organisms and algae. In the afternoon, the impressive fortified town of Aigues-Mortes awaits you, a medieval jewel in the midst of the Camargue salt meadows.
The imposing walled town was founded in the 13th century by King Louis IX as a starting point for the Crusades and is now one of the best-preserved medieval towns in France. On a walk through the historic old town you will explore the impressive town walls with their numerous towers, including the mighty Tour de Constance, which once served as a watchtower and prison. From the ramparts you will enjoy far-reaching views over the surrounding salt marshes and the unique landscape of the Camargue. Return to your hotel and dinner at leisure (not included).
Today you will immerse yourself once more in the authentic world of the Camargue – a fascinating landscape of marshes, salt fields and wide pastures, where black bulls graze and elegant white Camargue horses live freely. At a traditional manade you will be warmly welcomed by the gardians, the mounted herdsmen of the Camargue.
On a covered wagon ride across the extensive grounds, you will experience the unspoilt nature and wildlife at first hand and learn a great deal about centuries-old traditions – from bull breeding to life in the rhythm of the region. Afterwards you will refresh yourselves in a rustic setting with a typical Camargue lunch, which of course must include the regional speciality “Gardianne de Taureau” – tender braised bull meat in red wine. Camargue rice, local side dishes and a glass of regional wine are served with it.
Enjoy the authentic ambience and the warm welcome of your hosts. In the afternoon you continue to Arles, the “City of Art and History”. On a guided walk you will discover impressive traces of antiquity, including the well-preserved Roman amphitheatre, the ancient theatre and many other sights that tell of the rich past of this former Roman provincial capital. Afterwards you will have free time to explore the lanes of the old town on your own, visit a café or follow in the footsteps of Van Gogh – the famous painter was also once fascinated by Arles and the light of Provence. With many impressions and atmospheric pictures, you return to your hotel. Dinner at the hotel.
With many new impressions in your luggage, you begin your journey back to Switzerland.
You will spend 4 nights in the modern 4* Hotel Novotel La Grande Motte Golf, located right on the golf course and close to the beach and the pyramid-style architecture of the garden city. The hotel is eco-certified (Green Key label) and has a seasonal outdoor pool with a sun terrace.
