Rome boasts a gigantic legacy spanning 2,500 years of history. Hardly a street lacks traces of past eras. Yet modernity has also taken hold in Rome, making the city the political, economic and cultural centre of Italy. You will discover the world of antiquity, admire the heart of the Christian world in the Vatican and enjoy the Rome of today in the footsteps of Federico Fellini.
Trip details
Day 1: Switzerland - Rome
Enjoy the journey by Deluxe coach towards the sunny south. In the early afternoon you change in Milan to the high-speed Frecciarossa train, which takes you to Rome by evening.
Day 2: Christian Rome with the Vatican Museums
(Optional) Today you follow the traces of Christian Rome with your tour guide, walking from the hotel to the Vatican and St Peter's Basilica. You will admire the largest basilica in Christendom with its precious furnishings. Visit to the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel.
Day 3: Ancient Rome
Rome is really an open-air museum. You begin your “tour of antiquity“ on Capitoline Hill with a wonderful view over the Roman Forum. The Colosseum and the Via dei Fori Imperiali with the Imperial Forums follow. Free time in the afternoon. (Optional) Dinner in a typical Roman osteria in the trendy Trastevere district.
Day 4: Rome - "La dolce vita"
(Optional) In the footsteps of Fellini you explore a different Rome, experience at first hand the world-famous scene with Anita Ekberg in the Trevi Fountain from the film "La dolce vita" and climb the Spanish Steps.
Day 5: Villa d’Este – Castiglion
On a detour to picturesque Tivoli in the Sabine Hills you visit the Villa d' Este. It was converted by Cardinal d’Este into a magnificent Renaissance residence and furnished with a splendid Italian garden. Onward journey to southern Tuscany and Castiglion Fiorentino.
Day 6: Castiglion – Switzerland
Journey back to Switzerland.
In an excellent location, only 5-10 minutes' walk from the Vatican, you will stay in the heart of Rome for 4 nights at the elegantly renovated 3* Hotel il Cantico (official national category).
