Culinary journey to the land of apples, wine and pumpkins
Styria enchants with landscapes straight out of the most beautiful picture book. From the high alpine country with its unique mountain pastures, across the gentle rolling hills of the "Orchard of Austria", to the steaming spa region and the South Styrian wine country. In Graz, the historic heritage of a magnificent old town meets modern architecture, and urban flair meets provincial joie de vivre.
Journey to St. Ruprecht an der Raab.
(Optional) Excursion to Graz, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Guided walking tour. From the Schlossberg you enjoy a magnificent view. Narrow lanes, romantic courtyards and every architectural style from Gothic through Renaissance and Baroque to modern come together in Europe's most beautiful old town. Free afternoon in Graz.
(Optional) Scenic drive through the Styrian "Volcano Land" to the Vulcano Manufaktur, where you are taken into the world of ham and treated to tastings. At the foot of the legendary Riegersburg, which towers over a craggy rock, you visit Alois Gölles, whose family cultivates orchards and produces fine vinegars and noble spirits.
(Optional) Excursion to South Styria with its gentle hills covered in vines and mixed forest. Stop in Kitzeck, Austria's highest-situated wine village. Here you enjoy a superb view of Seggau Castle, once the residence of the Prince-Bishops of Seckau. At the Schneeberger family's Buschenschank you enjoy local farm produce.
At Piber Castle, Lipizzaners are bred for the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. You can watch the horses and visit the stables. In Stainz you reach the Schilcher Wine Road, home of the rosé wine of the same name. Styria is famous for its large fields of orange pumpkins. You stop at an old pumpkin seed oil mill, where the secret of Styria's "black gold", pumpkin seed oil, is revealed. Onward journey to Schladming.
Return journey via Innsbruck and back to Switzerland.
You stay for 4 nights in St. Ruprecht at the 4* Hotel Ochensberger (official regional category). This family-run house spoils its guests with high-quality cuisine, a Mediterranean atmosphere and Styrian hospitality. The comfort rooms are furnished with great attention to detail, and all have a bathroom or shower/WC, hairdryer, satellite TV and, in some cases, a balcony. On the return journey you spend the night at the 4* Stadthotel Brunner in Schladming. Equivalent hotels if the above are unavailable.
