The Magic of Provence

Trip highlights:

  • Avignon with the Pont d‘Avignon
  • The Ardèche Gorges
  • Farm in the Camargue
  • Hotel in the heart of Avignon

A feast for the senses – intense colours and intoxicating fragrances

Let yourself be seduced, like the Impressionists, by the unique light. Dark cypresses, olives and vines, the glow of the sunflower fields, the chirping of crickets at night, the spicy scent of lavender and thyme will enchant your senses.

Trip details

Day 1: Switzerland - Avignon

Via Geneva and Valence to Avignon.

Day 2: Avignon - Les Baux

In the morning, a walking tour of Avignon. The palace in which the popes resided for 100 years rises above the sea of houses like a fortress. Since the Middle Ages, a sturdy 4 km-long wall with towers and gates has protected the former "centre of the Christian world". In the afternoon, you will enjoy the view from Les Baux, a medieval "ghost town" perched on a rocky spur of the Alpilles.

Day 3: Pont du Gard - Ardèche

In the morning, you will admire the imposing "Pont du Gard", part of an aqueduct that bears witness to the exceptional engineering skill of the Romans. Then it's on to one of the most beautiful gorges in France – the Gorges de l'Ardèche. Panoramic roads offer breathtaking views of this tributary of the Rhône.

Day 4: Arles - Camargue

(Optional excursion) Visit to the Rhône city of Arles. The natural landscape of the Camargue lies in the Rhône delta and is known for cattle and horse breeding and salt production. At the "Manade des Baumelles" bull-breeding farm, you will be treated to a typical lunch. Stop by the sea at Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer.

Day 5: Luberon - Roussillon

Excursion to the Luberon region, which is as famous for its beautiful landscape as for its picturesque old villages. The simple Cistercian abbey of Sénanque, in the valley of the little River Sénancole, lies amid fields of lavender. Roussillon has arguably the most spectacular ochre quarries in the Luberon. Gordes, a village built entirely of stone, sits high above a green valley – a valley full of vineyards and cherry trees.

Day 6: Avignon - Switzerland

Return journey to Switzerland.

You will stay comfortably for 5 nights in the heart of Provence, in the middle of the old town of Avignon, at the modern 4* Hôtel Mercure Pont d'Avignon Centre (official national rating). It is only a few metres from the Palais des Papes and the famous bridge and makes an excellent base from which to explore Provence. The renovated rooms have a shower or bath/WC, hairdryer, air conditioning, TV, Wi-Fi, minibar, tea/coffee maker and safe. A hotel of equal standard will be used if the hotel is unavailable.
