Impressive Aare Gorge on the way through the impressive Aare Gorge

In Meiringen awaits you the impressive natural wonder - the Aare Gorge.

From the east entrance, you walk through the entire gorge from east to west, crossing footbridges and passing through tunnels along a safe path. This roughly 45-minute stroll, requiring neither effort nor danger, is a nature experience of a very special kind.

At its narrowest point, the gorge is less than 2 metres wide. The Aare flows through the gorge, considerably increasing its flow speed as a result. It leaves the gorge at 12 km/h. You will emerge at the exit deeply impressed.

Here at the west exit, in the Aare Gorge restaurant, a fine gorge speciality awaits you at lunchtime, and for dessert you can then sample the famous Meiringen meringues.

In the afternoon you will meet the master meringue baker in person. In the bakery of Frutal Meringues, he reveals the secret of his delicate temptation.

On request, the baker will also show you how to bake original meringues yourself (advance booking required).

Do you know the legend of the 'Tatzelwurm'? In 1814, the Bernese naturalist Samuel Studer reported the monster in the Aare Gorge: from Unterseen all the way to the Grimsel, there is a belief that a kind of serpent with an almost round head and short legs can occasionally be seen. Many oral traditions tell that this serpent, known colloquially as the 'Tatzelwurm', lives in the Aare Gorge. This sweet monster from the Hasli Valley - the 'Tatzelwurm' - can today be bought in all sizes at the Frutiger confectioner's in Meiringen.
